PIMM DMA – Pilot for industrial mobile communication in mining, Digitalised mining arena
PIMM DMA (Pilot for Industrial Mobile communication in Mining, Digitalised Mining Arena) is the continuation of the PIMM project. PIMM DMA will bring the innovative ideas and funding from the PIMM project to a maturity level where industrialization can start and business relations can be initated. PIMM DMA will further build understanding of how to specify services level agreements between involved suppliers and users, in new value networks. PIMM DMA will also build understanding of solutions for localized core network, supervision and control of various machinery, connected sensors and distributed control center to empower mining operators, all enabled by mobile network connectivity.
The PIMM project was a two year long project that focused on establishing a state of the art mobile network in a mine, and test a number of applications that are enabled by mobile communication. The PIMM project has shown through usage, measurements and simulations that cellular based communication has very good properties enabling robustness and at the same time guarantee performance and low latency for demanding applications.
During the PIMM project a number of areas was identified where further work is needed to increase maturity level and to reach a level where market forces will take off and start product and service development. That is the starting point of PIMM DMA.
Innovation is the overall objective with PIMM DMA and is expected to occur in several of the areas below:
- Innovation in service operations for industrial mobile networks
- Innovation in cellular communication technology
- Innovation in industrial products and services enabled by cellular communication
- Innovation in industrial automation focusing mining applications
- Innovation in systems-of-systems
PIMM DMA will deliver enough maturity level of technologies where product and service development typically starts. One essential result from PIMM DMA will be service level agreement (SLA) templates as starting point for expected future products and services enabling industrial automation in general and mining automation in particular.
